INVITE is a five-year European project. The project started in 2020 with the aim to apply new innovations in Plant Breeders' Rights and value for cultivation or use testing (VCU). One of the roles of Naktuinbouw is the use and implementation of DNA databases and image analysis, or phenotyping.

Aim INVITE
INVITE stands for INnovations in plant VarIety Testing in Europe. When new varieties are introduced, they often have new traits such as better resistance to biotic and abiotic stress conditions or can adapt better to sustainable crop production conditions. A large proportion of the budget is devoted to VCU testing in agricultural crop varieties, because this is where there is significant impact. This will provide the end user with greater insight into how a particular agricultural variety will perform under their own (environmental) conditions. This offers many benefits with large areas under cultivation.
Why is Naktuinbouw participating in the project?
We consider it vital that DUS and VCU testing is performed as reliably and efficiently as possible. This project contributes to that aim. We are focusing on representative crops that are important in the Dutch situation, especially potatoes, perennial ryegrass, wheat and tomatoes. In addition, data processing and data sharing are becoming increasingly important aspects.
Workpackages
Within the project nine workpackages have been defined. All the information generated by various packages creates a wealth of data. One of the roles of Naktuinbouw is structuring this data. The other themes we are contributing to are the use and implementation of DNA databases and image analysis, or phenotyping.
Cooperation
The project is funded by the EU with a budget of € 7 miljon. The INVITE consortium comprises a total of 29 Partners, including 14 research institutions (including the Duth WUR), 10 examination offices (including Naktuinbouw) and postregistration organisations, and four industry partners.
INVITE: Innovaties kwekersrechtonderzoek in de EU
INVITE is een vijfjarig Europees project. Het project startte in 2020 en richt zich op innovaties rond rassenonderzoek om de efficiëntie van de beoordeling te verbeteren. Het gaat om de weerbaarheid van nieuwe rassen tegen stress. Zowel om ziekten en plagen als om stress door omstandigheden zoals hitte en droogte. De nadruk ligt op ontwikkeling van nieuwe meet- en analysemethoden met sensoren, modellen en kunstmatige intelligentie. Naktuinbouw levert een aandeel in beeldanalyse, DNA en de ontsluiting van data.

Doel INVITE
INVITE staat voor INnovations in plant VarIety Testing in Europe. Het is de bedoeling met INVITE nieuwe innovaties toe te passen bij het kwekersrecht en het cultuur- en gebruikswaarde onderzoek (CGO). Bij de introductie van nieuwe rassen hebben die vaak nieuwe eigenschappen zoals beter bestand zijn tegen biotische en abiotische omstandigheden of dat ze zich beter aanpassen aan duurzame productieomstandigheden. Een groot deel van het budget gaat naar CGO-onderzoek bij landbouwrassen, omdat de impact daar groot is. Inzicht geven voor de eindgebruiker om zo goed mogelijk te weten wat een bepaald landbouwras oplevert binnen de eigen (klimaat)omstandigheden. Dit levert veel op met grote oppervlakten.
Waarom werkt Naktuinbouw mee?
We vinden het belangrijk dat er op een zo betrouwbaar en efficiënt mogelijke manier DUS- en CGO-onderzoek wordt uitgevoerd. Dit project levert daar een bijdrage aan. Naktuinbouw focust op voorbeeldgewassen die in de Nederlandse situatie van belang zijn, met name aardappel, Engels raaigras, tarwe en tomaat. Daarnaast wordt dataverwerking en datadeling steeds belangrijker.
Workpackages
In het project zijn negen zogenaamde workpackages oftewel werkpakketten benoemd. Naktuinbouw heeft onder andere een aandeel in het structureren van de data uit de verschillende pakketten. De andere thema’s waar wij aan meewerken zijn het gebruik en implementatie van DNA-databases en beeldanalyse oftewel fenotypering. Samenwerking
The Project ‘Innovations in plant VarIety Testing in Europe’ (INVITE) wordt gefinancierd door de EU met een budget van € 7 miljoen. In totaal bestaat INVITE uit 29 partners, waaronder 14 onderzoeksinstellingen (waaronder de WUR), 10 onderzoeksbureaus (waaronder Naktuinbouw), registratieorganisaties en vier branchepartners.
