Dear Members and Colleagues
We are pleased to invite you to the 10th ISSS Conference, an event sponsored by the International Society for Seed Science in partnership with the Federal University of Bahia, which will be held from April 10 to 15, 2011, at the Sauipe Class Hotel, which is located at Costa do Sauípe, one of the most beautiful hotel complexes and coastal region located 60 km from the airport and 80 km from Salvador, capital city of the state of Bahia.
With an estimated 500 delegates, the 10th ISSS Conference aims to bring together students, researchers, professionals of the seed industry and of the biobased seed industry, and other professionals in the seed sector. This important forum proposes to debate on the future of science in the global seed scenario involving agriculture, plant biodiversity and its uses, having as main theme 'Seed Science in the 21st Century'.
During the 6-day program, there will be conferences and thematic sessions with lectures, workshops and poster sessions which will give participants the opportunity to debate advances in seed research and new directions, and present papers in what is considered to be one of the most important seed science forums worldwide. Full information about the program can be found on the conference website (https://www.seedtest.org/stream/nl-l---1--%400dfbc7321031--216.br).
For the first time, there will be an ISTA session as part of the ISSS meeting, which will complement the ISSS session that ISTA has included in the ISTA Seed Symposium for many years.
The session has been organised by Dr Alison Powell who will also Chair the session, which has as its theme the Application of seed science to the evaluation and improvement of seed quality. The aim of the session is to illustrate how basic seed science has contributed to, and will continue to contribute, to the development of seed quality evaluation and its improvement. Five speakers, whose work illustrates well the transfer of basic science into practice, have been invited to contribute to the session. The speakers and their presentation titles will be:
- Françoise Corbineau (Université Pierre et Marie Curie, France): Physiological, biochemical and molecular markers of seed quality
- Jose Marcio Rocha Faria (Federal University of Lavras, Brazil): The use of germinated orthodox seeds in studies on desiccation sensitivity
- Marie-Hélène Wagner (SNES, GEVES, France):Knowledge based research towards accurate and rapid testing of seed quality in winter rape.
- Alan Taylor (Cornell University, USA): The interface of seed treatment and coating technologies with seed biology
- Stan Matthews (University of Aberdeen, UK):Evaluation of seed quality: from physiology to international standardization
The session will be supported by ABRATES, the major seed organisation in Brazil. We hope that this new initiative will strengthen the links between all three seed-focused organizations, ISTA, ISSS and ABRATES. We hope we shall see some ISTA members at the conference in Brazil.
