Canterra Seeds adds Protinus to canola portfolio options - Seed-applied fertilizer delivers a strong start for seedlings

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
December 15, 2010

Two western Canadian companies have teamed up to provide canola growers a new seed-applied fertilizer option for enhanced early plant growth. Canterra Seeds now offers PROTINUS™, a Wolf Trax product, on two canola hybrids for the 2011 growing season.

PROTINUS is an innovative seed-applied fertilizer designed to enhance early seedling growth. Improved early growth results in plants that are more vigorous and can reach their full yield potential. Studies conducted by Wolf Trax and third parties have shown that PROTINUS treatment delivers faster, more even emergence; larger seedlings with longer, more developed roots and the ability to withstand cool growing temperatures.

“PROTINUS received registration in March 2010. To have the first seed partner within a year of registration is exciting and a demonstration of the product’s quality,” says Jennifer Bailes, director of seed products and innovations at Wolf Trax, manufacturer of PROTINUS. “We are excited to offer PROTINUS commercially in Canada for the first time with a fellow Winnipeg company also dedicated to bringing innovative, valuable and research-backed agricultural products to growers.”

After testing PROTINUS in the company’s YieldWorks™ trials for two years, CANTERRA SEEDS is offering PROTINUS on two canola hybrids, CANTERRA 1950 and CANTERRA 1970. Growers interested in realizing the benefits of early crop nutrition from PROTINUS on their canola seed need to speak with their CANTERRA dealer before Jan. 10, 2011.

“At CANTERRA, we are always looking for products that add to the performance of our canola varieties,” says Ron Brand, director, marketing and sales for CANTERRA SEEDS. “Offering PROTINUS gives growers another option to deliver nutrients to the seed early in the season.”

The 1950 and 1970 varieties are CANTERRA’s two highest-performing new hybrids, says Brand. Adding PROTINUS will help growers realize the highest yield potential from their canola seed.

“As growers consider their input options for this season’s canola crop, adding PROTINUS to their seed package can really pay off,” Bailes adds. “More even emergence and larger, more vigorous seedlings help the crop compete with weeds. A larger root system can help the crop access more nutrients and moisture and withstand tough growing conditions. All in all, PROTINUS gets the crop off to a great start.”

PROTINUS is formulated and designed for use by professional seed treaters. For more information, growers should call Wolf Trax at 204-237-9653 or CANTEERA SEEDS at 204-988-9750.
