Influence of the environment on genetically engineered wheat

November 210

Source: ISB News Report - November 2010

Author: Simon L. Zeller

Evolutionary and ecological studies on wild plants suggest that genotype X environment interactions can be large. Similar interactions in genetically engineered (GE) plants exposed to different environments might influence the performance of a GE plant or cause unintended phenotypic effects. Since glasshouse and field environments differ in many aspects, it is important to understand how these differences might influence the behavior of these plants. This study assessed the influence of environmental factors on intended and unintended effects, using spring wheat variety Bobwhite SH 98 26 Triticum aestivum L. transformed with the wheat Pm3b powdery mildew resistance gene, and determined whether these would be detectable both in the glasshouse and in the field.
