Schaff Seed Companies, founded in 1975 by Victor Schaff, has acquired Reclamation Seed Corporation, the parent company to Granite Seed, Bruce Seed Farm, L&H Seeds, Northwest Seed, and Nature’s Seed. Together with Mr. Schaff’s seed companies – S&S Seeds, Pacifi c Coast Seed, Hedgerow Farms, Comstock Seed, Kamprath Seed, and Environmental Seed Producers – the combined entity is now the largest native seed supplier in North America, with 12 locations in seven western States.
“We view this acquisition as the ideal marriage between two sets of seed entities with successful track records of supplying a diverse range of native seed species, complimented by erosion control products, to their respective markets,” says Mr. Schaff. “Together, we are able to provide a unique one-stop solution to virtually any land reclamation or beautification project, particularly in the western U.S., whether those projects call for highly specialized local ecotypes, or large-scale landscape solutions in response to emergency stabilization situations.”
The combined entity has significant farming operations in California, Washington, and Montana, as well as the unique ability to coordinate specialized wild-land seed collections throughout the western U.S. These activities are supported by additional distribution and sales locations in Oregon, Utah, Colorado, and Arizona. “We are now able to leverage an unparalleled diversity of production, procurement, sales, and distribution resources to deliver the right solution to our customers on a just-in-time basis, regardless of size or complexity,” says Rob Wendell, who will serve as CEO. “Ultimately it’s about providing the best possible reclamation solutions to our customers, and this transaction enables us to execute on that at a whole new level.”
A key motivation of the deal was to provide more site specific and local ecotype solutions for customers across a wider geography. “Customers ranging from homeowners to government agencies are calling for reclamation solutions rooted in seed that is native or locally adapted,” says Mr. Schaff. “This business combination goes a long way toward supporting that trend, while still being able to readily deliver large quantity workhorse species in response to emergency stabilization situations typically associated with wildfires. We are now able to bring the best of both solutions depending upon what our customers need.”
Schaff Seed Companies serves a highly diverse range of customers that includes small landowners, ranchers, contractors, Fortune 500 corporations, and various government agencies including departments of transportation, state environmental offices, U.S. Fish and Wildlife, the United States Forest Service, and the Bureau of Land Management. The company produces and procures hundreds of seed species and varieties, complimented by a complete line of erosion control materials, providing solutions ranging from small plots to tens of thousands of acres. It’s e-commerce brand, Nature’s Seed (www.naturesseed.com), caters to homeowners and small landowners nationwide.
