UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy – COVID-19 update

Davis, CA, USA
June 4, 2020

As with many other educational programs around the world, the UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy (PBA) has been affected by the COVID-19 situation.  Despite the difficulties, the program is active and continues to provide valuable instruction to the participants.

Class seven of the PBA in Davis (PBAVII) was scheduled for its final session and graduation this week but had to be postponed until September.  The participants and instructors are currently interacting weekly regarding final projects.

Class six of the PBA in Europe (EPBAVI) had two sessions postponed (March and June).  The class meets weekly online for office hours to discuss plant breeding topics.  The participants were polled asking if they would consider having a session online due to COVID-19.  Unanimously, they voted to postpone and wait until they could have in-person sessions, boasting the value of in-person discussions and education-the cornerstone of the UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy and SBC professional classes.

Class eight of PBA Davis (visit PBAVIII online), scheduled to start this coming fall, is continuing with registration. To date, more of the half of the maximum spots are filled despite the uncertainties.

UC Davis SBC is extending the early registration discount until further notice and not requiring security deposits until the class starting date is certain.

The UC Davis Plant Breeding Academy (PBA) is a premium professional certificate program offered in USA, Europe and Africa.  To date, more than 350 breeders from over 60 countries have attended the UC Davis PBA, making it the most significant program of its kind. PBA is a postgraduate program that teaches the fundamentals of plant breeding, genetics and statistics through lectures, discussion, and field trips to public and private breeding programs. The 2020 class core curriculum will maintain the upgrades from the previous classes and add modules to address the most recent development in plant breeding theory and practice.

The core instructor list includes internationally recognized experts in plant breeding and seed technology: Kent Bradford, Allen Van Deynze, Rale Gjuric (UC Davis), Rita Mumm (University of Illinois) and Todd Wehner (NCSU). They will be supported by a number of guest lecturers from the private industry and academia.
