May 22nd is the International Day for Biological Diversity (IBD). ‘Biodiversity’ is the collective name for the huge variety of micro-organisms, animals and plants. The Convention on Biological Diversity instigated this day to raise awareness for the problems surrounding biodiversity and to remind people of their responsibility to protect our natural inheritance. The theme for 2020 is; ‘Our Solutions are in Nature’.
This is a day to let the sun shine fully on SunPatiens! Did you know that SunPatiens contributes to the maintenance of biodiversity? Yes, this hybrid Impatiens has been giving back to nature since 2006. Sakata Seed Corporation made an agreement with the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development (IAARD) to have access to breeding material from native species of Impatiens in Indonesia for the development of SunPatiens. The agreement that was signed at that time was a forerunner of the current Nagoya Protocol. The Nagoya Protocol, under the Convention for Biodiversity, controls the rights and obligations for access and benefit sharing for utilization of genetic resources. Sakata pays a royalty to the Indonesian government on every SunPatiens cutting sold, which is used for the maintenance of biodiversity in that land. The agreement was updated in 2014, with new joint research implemented that will continue to contribute to an even better structure for utilization of genetic resources, and the conservation of biodiversity which is the irreplaceable heritage of mankind.
SunPatiens, the unique result of this collaboration, thrives in sun or shade, rain or shine and the strength of the interspecific hybrid breeding has resulted in a unique garden performer which flowers continuously from spring to the first true frost of autumn, is low-maintenance and free from diseases such as Downey Mildew. New breeding development in SunPatiens is developing continuously better and stronger varieties with even better garden performance and climate tolerance.

SunPatiens® draagt bij aan biodiversiteit
22 mei is de Internationale Dag van de Biodiversiteit! Biodiversiteit is de verzamelnaam voor de grote verscheidenheid aan micro-organismen, dieren- en plantensoorten. De dag is in het leven geroepen om aandacht te vragen voor de problematiek rondom biodiversiteit en om zo mensen op hun verantwoordelijkheid aan te spreken om het natuurlijk erfgoed te bewaken.
Op deze dag zetten wij graag de SunPatiens in het volle zonnetje! Wist je namelijk dat SunPatiens bijdraagt aan het behoud van biodiversiteit? Jazeker, deze hybride impatiens geeft al terug aan de natuur sinds 2006! Destijds heeft veredelaar Sakata Seed Corporation een overeenkomst gesloten met Indonesië (IAARD) voor toegang tot inheemse planten, waar SunPatiens uit is voortgekomen. De overeenkomst die destijds was gesloten met Indonesië, was een voorloper op het huidige Nagoya Protocol. Het Nagoya Protocol regelt onder het Biodiversiteitsverdrag de rechten en plichten rondom toegang tot deze bronnen en het eerlijk delen van wat het gebruik ervan oplevert, zoals geld of kennis. Dat houdt dus in dat voor elke SunPatiens die wordt gekocht, er een bedrag terug gaat naar Indonesië ten behoeve van lokaal onderzoek met betrekking tot het behoud van biodiversiteit. Wanneer jij een SunPatiens plantje koopt, investeer je in het behoud van biodiversiteit en daarnaast geniet je van een prachtige kleurrijke tuin of balkon totdat de vorst weer opkomt.
SunPatiens zijn unieke Impatiens en integendeel tot de standaard vlijtige liesjes, bloeien ze drie seizoenen lang. De planten zijn ook nog eens compleet ongevoelig voor meeldauw en onderhoudsvriendelijk, ze hebben namelijk alleen maar water nodig om in goede bloei te blijven.
