As spring growth begins in earnest (after the vernal equinox), it is important to ‘direct’ winter barley growth to maximise yield potential and use inputs as efficiently as possible.
Simply put, we must aim to produce as many grains as possible, knowing that the barley plant will fill those grains.
One practical and reliable way to do this is to stop the main tiller getting too strong at the expense of weaker side tillers. Plant growth regulators such as CCC and Moddus have this effect in barley (as does rolling) but only up to certain growth stages i.e. before 1st node.
