Sakata Seed America cancels its participation in the horticulture industry’s annual California Spring Trials (CAST) event due to COVID-19 concerns

Salinas, California, USA
March 10, 2020

Sakata Seed America has officially announced the decision to cancel participation in the horticulture industry’s annual California Spring Trials (CAST) event due to concerns surrounding the COVID-19 virus.

“We do not take this decision lightly; great effort is put into this event and we look forward to connecting with our industry partners and showcasing our genetics year after year. However, it’s important that we err on the side of caution at this time rather than risk the health of our staff, dependents, customers and their families,” states Joe Cimino, Head of the Sakata Ornamental group.

On March 11th 2020, Santa Clara County, home of Sakata’s Morgan Hill headquarters, put an order in place cancelling all mass gatherings due to an increasing rate of COVID-19. “Although Monterey County, where our Salinas greenhouses and event site are located, has yet to put such an order in effect, this is a precautionary measure with our guests and their families at the forefront of our minds,” continues Cimino.

Although Sakata will not be hosting guests at the CAST event, which was set to run March 27th-30th at their Salinas greenhouses, they have other ideas in mind. According to Sakata Senior Marketing Manager, Alicia Suits, “We will still showcase our products to the industry and all registered attendees. Be on the lookout for future communication in lieu of a physical event.”

Sakata invites the CAST attendees to join them at the next industry-wide event, Cultivate ’20 in Columbus Ohio at Booth# 425.

Headquartered in Morgan Hill, CA, Sakata Seed America is a major research, seed production and marketing-distribution subsidiary of Sakata Seed Corporation, established in 1913. Sakata Seed America serves as the headquarters for the North American operations. Sakata’s objective is to quickly and efficiently meet industry expectations for quality seed, innovative genetics and excellent greenhouse and field performance.
