The PGRO Pulse Field Day at Stubton gave LSPB breeders, Craig Padley and Edina Kare, the opportunity to evaluate LSPB’s current and candidate varieties, both in the official RL trials, and the company’s own trials at the adjacent site.
“Lynx is the leading spring bean for yield and looks good in the trials plots, as do Fanfare, Vertigo and Mallory. These take the top four places for yield on the 2019 RL - as well as bringing improved resistance to downy mildew,” comments Craig Padley.
“We also have our newly P1 Recommended varieties Victus and Tiffany in the PGRO plots and in our trials. These varieties are in the new RL category for LVC (low vicine/convicine) with a high protein and low vicine and convicine content that will help to further develop the UK pulse market with end users.
“Our large blue peas are at the site, including Croft, which was newly P1 listed for 2019. We are confident that this year’s trials will confirm its high yield, good standing power, good colour retention plus good resistance to Downy mildew.
“As well as these PGRO official trials, we have a whole set of our private company trials on the same farm and here we are continually evaluating our RL current varieties and looking at a wide range of new varieties. The most promising of these will proceeding into official trials this autumn,” adds Mr Padley.
