Updated fact sheets on the PGRO Recommended varieties of spring beans, combining peas and AHDB Recommended winter oilseed rape varieties are available on LSPB’s web site giving yield comparisons and key agronomic characters, allowing users to check each variety’s key characters online, or to download the sheet for reference.
In the 2019 PGRO Pulse Recommended Lists, LSPB's spring bean varieties Lynx, Fanfare, Vertigo and Mallory took the top four places for yield - as well as bringing improved resistance to downy mildew.
The list also saw a new sub-category for LVC (low vicine/convicine) spring beans with LSPB varieties Victus and Tiffany being the first ever listed. They are distinguished by a high protein and low vicine and convicine content - characters that will help to further develop the UK pulse market with end users. Tiffany and Victus are already both being marketed with premiums on buy back contract for specialist animal feed use.
The PGRO Recommended List for peas features the company's large blue peas Bluetime, Blueman and Bluetooth, with Bluetime having the top yield and Blueman the highest rating for downy mildew. They are joined by newly listed Croft with a P1 rating.?? The large blue pea Campus has a leading position in the marketplace with over 20% of the large blues certified in the UK and an excellent reputation with end users – and is popular with growers due to its standing power and harvestability.?? Fully recommended Marrowfat variety Aikido maintains its position as the leading variety in its class.
The AHDB Recommended List for winter oilseed rape 2019/20 shows that Wembley continues to be one of the stalwarts of the East/West region where its consistently high gross output keeps it in the premier league as fully recommended. It is an early flowering restored hybrid with a high resistance to lodging combined with good stem stiffness at maturity, added to high light leaf spot resistance.
In the AHDB clubroot resistant spot for both East/West and North regions, Mentor is still the only fully recommended variety. It is a restored hybrid with a specific recommendation for its resistance to the common strains of clubroot. Mentor has high resistance to lodging and is very stiff-stemmed at maturity. LSPB’s new clubroot resistant variety Crome now joins Mentor as AHDB P1 Recommended and brings a very worthwhile improvement in gross output, as well as sharing Mentor’s high resistance to lodging and its stem stiffness.
