Borlaug Global Rust Initiative announces its newest web resource: the BGRI Training web suite

October 30, 2018

The Borlaug Global Rust Initiative is pleased to announce its newest web resource: the BGRI Training web suite.  Featuring over 40 training videos, this resource is designed to aid early career wheat and rust researchers in their studies and to establish best practices for things like sample preparation, race analysis, etc.

Highlights include presentations from the Wheat Breeding Technology Workshop held in April 2018.  Led by Lee Hickey, this 1.5 day seminar was completely full but now is your chance to learn from top scientists about cutting-edge technology like genomic selection.

Also available is the complete text of “Protocols for Race Analysis of Wheat Stem Rust” written Drs. Woldeab, Hailu and Bacha, of the Ethiopian Institute of Agricultural Research, based at the Ambo Plant Protection Research Center. This manual guides you through race analysis, the collection and storage of stem rust and its incubation, and race identification.

Complete Courses:

Art and Science of Rust Pathology and Applied Plant Breeding

Wheat Breeding Technology Workshop

The BGRI is also happy to have collected presentations and supporting materials for the “Art and Science of Rust Pathology and Applied Plant Breeding.”  Learn from four of the top wheat researchers in the world: Robert Park, Dave Hodson, Zak Pretorius, and Gordon Cisar about surveillance, race analysis, nomenclature, and host-pathogen interactions.

You can filter the number of videos by keyword by using the drop-down menu on the right side.  When you select a keyword and press the Apply button the view will refresh with only the videos containing that keyword. You can work your way through a complete course, or you can pick and choose individual videos that are relevant to your current course of inquiry.  The site is divided into three primary categories: Pathology, Breeding, and Surveillance.  Click on one of the large images on the front page to see the videos in each primary subject.  Pathology is currently divided into rust and blast.  Different pathogens will be added as we add to our collection. When you are on a primary subject page, for instance Breeding, you will see a gallery of the available videos.

Watch the video on the same page, or you can watch it YouTube by clicking on the words YouTube at the bottom of the video window.

This resource is for the BGRI community and beyond, but we need your help to let it grow.  Please contact the BGRI if you have training materials you would like to share or if there are topics that we have not covered yet.
