Potato Leaf Roll Virus (PLRV) and Potato Virus Y (PVY) are two of the most serious viral diseases affecting potato growers in North America. These members of the Potyviridae family deliver a powerful one-two punch of quality and yield losses.
While these two viruses are related, each one has its own distinct epidemiology and should be treated individually.
In a new Focus on Potato webcast titled “Preventing the Spread of Potato Viruses:
What Insecticides Can and Cannot Do,” Andrei Alyokhin, Professor of applied entomology at the University of Maine, helps extension agents, consultants, growers, and other practitioners in North America optimize insecticide use for controlling aphid vectors of PLRV and PVY in their crops.
During this 20-minute presentation, viewers will learn the differences between persistently and non-persistently transmitted viruses, between colonizing and non-colonizing aphid species, and their implications for making proper decisions on using insecticides.
This presentation is open access through July 31, 2015.
