Measuring crossovers with fluorescent pollen

United Kingdom

The Henderson laboratory at the University of Cambridge, in collaboration with the laboratory of Greg Copenhaver (University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill), has published a paper in Nature Protocols describing measurement of crossover recombination using flow cytometry of fluorescent pollen. In this protocol, 50,000 pollen grains can be counted in 10 minutes, providing significant advantage over the currently used method that takes over 25 hours of manual scoring. This approach will accelerate study of crossover recombination in plants, which is an important tool for crop breeding.
