Best practice for education and training in bioinformatics

Norwich, United Kingdom
September 13, 2013

Today’s launch of the Briefings in Bioinformatics Special Issue on Training and Education in Bioinformatics featured an editorial by TGACs Head of Training and Outreach, Dr Vicky Schneider co-authored by Prof. John R Jungck of the  Center for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology at the University of Delaware entitled “International, Interdisciplinary, Multi-level Bioinformatics Training & Education”.

The editorial discusses not only the speed of change affected by computer based analytical tools but also the use of these tools in other areas and thus the necessary education required by tomorrow’s life scientists across the global community.

Due to the research data and tools being accessible, the recognition by faculty members of the need for professional development and the dawning realisation by students that bioinformatics skills hold the key to future employment now is the ideal opportunity to progress education.  The community appears in agreement that the future requires scientists with quantitative reasoning skills who can conceptualise the bioinformatics challenges ahead.

The issue contains 13 papers, whose authors describe, exciting possibilities that are adoptable, adaptable, and implementable in a wide variety of contexts.

Co-editor Dr Vicky Schneider, “there are multiple challenges facing the manner in which bioinformatics is currently taught and we are hoping this is the first of many opportunities to bring recognition for best practice in education and training in this area.”
