Getting to the root of soybean stress

Greensboro, North Carolina, USA

  • Increased research is pointing to root health as the key to improving soybean yield
  • Root systems are often overlooked when evaluating the health of a plant under stress
  • CruiserMaxxBeans applied with Vibrance promotes RootingPower

With the season wrapping up after one of the worst droughts on record, we can finally breathe a sigh of relief that this stressful year is behind us. As we begin to prepare for next year, one lesson learned from this past season is the importance of growing a soybean crop that can handle environmental stress. And while this season may have brought extra stress upon both growers and their soybeans, preparing for next season is the best way to help make the 2013 growing season a success.

According to the United Soybean Board, the soybean root system is often overlooked when evaluating the health of a plant under stress and can be blamed for 70 to 80 percent of plant disorders. However, with more and more research pointing to root health as the key for improving soybean yield, Syngenta has turned its attention below the soil surface.

“After such a dry season, it’s only become more evident that a healthy root system is an integral part of a successful yield,” said David Winston, seedcare brand asset lead, Syngenta. “Soybean roots are responsible for absorbing large amounts of moisture and nutrients that are essential for plant growth. So, in dry years when soybeans are faced with increased environmental stress, a healthy root system is even more important.”

In addition to the environmental stressors that impact root systems, early-season insects and diseases can inflict damage on soybean roots as well. Weakened root systems impact a plant’s ability to efficiently absorb water and nutrients. These damaging factors leave stressed soybeans at an even greater disadvantage.

CruiserMaxx® Beans insecticide/fungicide, a combination of separately registered products, applied with new Vibrance™ fungicide seed treatment helps soybeans withstand environmental stress through unmatched disease and insect protection and RootingPower capabilities.

“CruiserMaxx Beans applied with Vibrance promotes strong and healthy root systems throughout all stages of the crop through its ideal soil mobility, systemic protection, long-lasting performance and superior disease protection,” says Winston. “This allows for more efficient water and nutrient uptake, stronger stems and sturdier foliage for improved stress tolerance and maximized yield.”

So as you prepare for the 2013 season, give your next soybean crop the best chance to withstand whatever environmental stress may arise with CruiserMaxx Beans applied with Vibrance for consistent yield performance year after year.
