BrettYoung, Cargill and Syngenta Canada announce canola variety acquisition agreement

Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
June 29, 2017

Brett-Young Seeds Limited, Cargill Limited and Syngenta Canada Inc. are pleased to announce that BrettYoung will acquire Syngenta’s inventory of canola varieties currently named SY4157, SY4166 and SY4187. Concurrently, BrettYoung will enter into a licensing agreement with Cargill Limited, the breeder of these high-performance varieties. Syngenta Canada will be responsible for all matters related to the sale of these products from the 2016/17 selling season. The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions.

“This development broadens BrettYoung’s canola portfolio,” said Eric Gregory, Marketing Director, BrettYoung. “This is particularly relevant in light of changing needs to address blackleg in canola production and the new, voluntary blackleg gene classification system advocated by the Canola Council of Canada. With the addition of these three hybrids from Cargill, BrettYoung will be in a leading position regarding genetic-based blackleg solutions which we plan to make available to all canola growers in 2018.”

Shaun Vey, Product Manager for Syngenta, commented, “These varieties have been strong performers and an important part of our portfolio. With this transaction they will continue to be available to canola growers from BrettYoung.”

Lyle DePauw, Seed Product Line Manager for Cargill’s global edible oils business added, “BrettYoung has a very strong canola portfolio in the marketplace. We are pleased BrettYoung sees further growth opportunities and are moving forward with these high-yielding, high-performance canola varieties from Cargill’s breeding program.”

The current variety names SY4157, SY4166 and SY4187 will be revised to 4157 RR, 4166 RR and 4187 RR subject to Canadian Food Inspection Agency approval.
