A new Sugar Beet R&D research centre, the 'SESVanderHave Innovation Centre (SVIC)', was inaugurated in the presence of 250 customers and leading scientists from around the world last week in Tienen, Belgium. The centre is one of the most high-tech research facilities built by the sugar industry, with over 13,000 m2 of glasshouses and 2,000 m2 of laboratories.
ESA’s Secretary General Garlich von Essen, among the speakers at the inauguration, stressed the importance of research and innovation in the seed and farming sectors, underling that yield increases in European arable farming have being achieved through innovation and not intensification.
He also encouraged growers to continue embracing the latest plant breeding methods and also new varieties. He concluded his speech saying that further success in the sugar beet (and other) industry needs an appropriate regulatory framework in Europe.
