Due to the relevance of the issues associated with controlling whitefly populations in the melon production systems of Central America and the impact the CYSDV (Cucurbit Yellow Stunting Disorder Virus) is having on the production and quality of cucurbits; representatives of all melon and watermelon export growers from Costa Rica attended the conference, as well as, government officials and small growers. This resulted on a successful activity with a measurable impact on the industry and the participation of more than 70 people; many of them top level decision makers. Dr. Rafael Jordan, Vegetable Seeds Pathologist for the region lead the discussion giving key insights to this predominate regional issue.

Key Customer attendees of Costa Rica.

Carlos H. Umaña, Vegetable Seed Account Manager for Melon and Watermelon commented “I am impressed by the technical level we were able to achieve with a variety of guest speakers that approached the issue from diverse angles. From the insect’s biology and population dynamics to IPM and of course the valuable contribution of VS’s R&D Dr. Rafael Jordan, who spoke about the virus biology and tolerance development to whitefly-borne diseases. This kept the attention of the audience during a very long and intense day”.
