The National Watermelon Association (NWA) convention held in New Orleans, Louisiana proved to be a worthy event as a large number of attendees came in to support the watermelon industry. Bayer was woven within the convention’s agenda through various points of the 3 day event.

The convention touched on various educational topics that are major concerns of the watermelon growing community such as labor issues, food safety and Bee Health. Roy Morris, Sales Specialist for Florida District represented as a Bee Ambassador and delivered a positive message to the audience regarding how Bayer is investing in this issue through the Bee Care Program.
The NWA also continued to host time honoured traditional events of the industry. This included support to the Watermelon queen program (Congratulations to Georgia’s Carla Penney for winning the National title!) and a Watermelon seed spitting contest. Rob Beets, Sales Specialist for Watermelon and Melon, competed in the seed spitting contest with a score in the 40 foot range!
Vegetables seeds were also well represented in carrying the team’s message “Strength in Nunhems”. Russ Beckham, Sales Specialist for Watermelon and Melon, addressed the audience through a welcome speech during the Saturday night awards banquet, where Bayer was the primary sponsor. He noted the strengths within the industry, the strengths within our customers, and the strengths in innovation; all of which support a healthy watermelon community.

As part of the trade show, Bayer incorporated samples of our newest SuperSeedless® variety, 7197HQ F1 within the display. As the only represented company to provide actual fruit samples, many customers were able to enjoy this sweet tasting variety, which has led to great interest and potential for 7197HQ F1, as well as, other varieties.
“This year’s NWA event was an extremely interactive convention, where all members of the watermelon family came together to celebrate success. Not only were we able to be educated regarding how to better serve our industry, but we also were able to spend quality time with our customers. We cannot replace the comradery we have as a team; working together to continue to build strong working relationships. In addition, to be able to show case one of our newest varieties to many customers at once is irreplaceable. Overall the convention was a complete success!!” Rosie Aguirre, Account Manager for Watermelon and Melon.
