With the mungbean season well underway across New South Wales and Queensland, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is offering growers an 'agronomic helping hand' with the launch of the Mungbean GrowNotes.

Mungbean GrowNotes can be accessed online at www.grdc.com.au/GrowNotes and follows the launch of the barley, sorghum, sunflower, faba beans, wheat, durum, chickpea and maize modules which are being extensively used by growers and agronomists across the northern cropping region.

Mungbean GrowNotes equips growers with the latest research and extension information, paving the way for valuable gains in crop production and profitability through improved management decisions.

Its launch coincides with a bumper spring plant across parts of the northern cropping belt and high market prices on the back of strong demand from China.

The module offers best practice advice on all aspects of mungbean production from pre-sowing planning to paddock preparation, sowing practices, crop nutrition, fertiliser, weed control, disease and pest management, harvest and storage practices, environmental issues and marketing.

Hundreds of hyperlinks to articles, research papers and videos are provided throughout the document providing ready access to a massive bank of industry information for those growers and advisors wanting additional advice on specific topics.

This is the first time that such a comprehensive range of information has been so readily accessible to growers and is a direct response to calls from industry to provide crop-specific information targeted to individual regions and cropping environments.

Importantly, GrowNotes are also helping the GRDC identify gaps in industry research, providing feedback for consideration in future investment priorities according to GRDC Northern Panel chair James Clark.

“The GRDC is well aware that the production and agronomic challenges confronting the northern grains industry are ever-growing in size and complexity,” Mr Clark said.

“We will continue to invest in areas that can help drive profitability improvements for northern growers and that includes communicating crop-specific best practice management recommendations that have been developed as a result of more than 20 years of regionally focussed research and development work.

“GRDC GrowNotes will play a vital role in keeping growers and advisors abreast of the latest research work and outcomes and will be regularly updated as new information comes to hand.

“At the same time, it will help the GRDC identify any gaps in research needs and earmark them as potential future investment areas.”
