What’s new on Growing Voices: an online platform to think again about GM crops in Europe

Brussels, Belgium
September 8, 2014

Growing Voices, a EuropaBio initiative launched last January, is a digital forum highlighting the broad-based and growing public constituency interested in genetically modified (GM) crops in Europe. Multilingual and easy to surf, it targets anyone who is curious about a technology that has already offered a number of benefits for millions of farmers worldwide and to society at large.

Coming up next: European Biotech Week

A social media campaign will be launched on the Growing Voice platform as part of the 2014 edition of European Biotech Week that will take place across Europe between October 6th and 12th, 2014. Check out the Growing Voices’ Campaign page for more details – coming soon!

The Growing Voices initiative

The goal of the initiative and of the forum is to offer easily accessible information, in several European languages, in the form of short and diverse videos addressing the complex and fascinating reality of this advanced technology. With this objective in mind, EuropaBio hopes to foster an informed public debate and a renewed dialogue on GMOs in light of recent developments, promising discoveries and information on the actual adoption of the technology worldwide.

“The Growingvoices.eu platform and its many testimonials from people across Europe demonstrate that there are a number of Europeans who are in favour of this technology and want the freedom to choose to benefit from it. Forthe last two decades, the discussion around GMOs has lacked an element of information and progress remaining too simply polarized and politicized”, says Nathalie Moll, Secretary General at EuropaBio. “We recognise that more needs to be done to share information about how agricultural biotechnology offers tangible benefits to farmers around the world and to society at large. Citizens have the right to be informed, consumers and farmers should be guaranteed the right to choose, and with Growinvoices.eu we hope  to contribute to ensuring that Europe doesn’t miss out on such an important technology”, she adds.

The Growing Voices interface

Growing Voices currently contains video interviews, infographics, podcasts, news articles, blog posts and quotes from public figures in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Polish. The videos feature scientists, farmers, consumers, food chain representatives, youth and politicians from Europe and beyond. The materials are organised around six main topics: trade, innovation, environment, economy, food security and science. Other features include a list of events, a current campaignspage and a Twitter account that offer ways to keep track of what’s happening in this area and get involved.

Stay tuned on Growing Voices

A Growing Voices Newsletter containing five videos is issued once every two months to keep you up to date on what has been said recently about green biotech. Among other topics, the Julyedition explores the unfounded scare stories about GMOs in India and the need for tolerance levels in trade and agriculture.
