Vilmorin Cie has just closed the full takeover of the company Seed Asia, whose head office is based in Bangkok (Thailand). Specialized for more than twenty years in the creation, production and distribution of hybrid tropical corn, Seed Asia is one of the rare independent local players for this crop.
Seed Asia, with a headcount of more than 80, has an extensive sales network of over 200 distributors across South East Asia. Representing around 8% of the Thai market, in 2013 the company achieved growing sales of 9 million dollars, including 40% made internationally (Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, etc.). Seed Asia has two operating entities, in Thailand and Cambodia, along with other research and production facilities.
The acquisition of Seed Asia corresponds to Vilmorin Cie’s strategic objective of internationalizing its corn seed activities, with locations in a new area with high potential – South East Asia, which represents nearly 9 million hectares of corn. Furthermore, through this operation Vilmorin Cie has gained access to proprietary genetic resources of high quality tropical corn, well-suited to other zones including India, Brazil, southern China and Africa. Vilmorin Cie will also benefit from existing co-operation agreements between Seed Asia and research institutes and universities, particularly in the Philippines, Brazil and the United States.

Vilmorin Cie vient de conclure la prise de contrôle intégral de la société Seed Asia, dont le siège est basé à Bangkok (Thaïlande). Spécialisée depuis plus de 20 ans dans la création, la production et la distribution de maïs tropical hybride, Seed Asia figure parmi les rares acteurs locaux indépendants pour cette espèce.
Seed Asia, qui emploie plus de 80 salariés, bénéficie d’un réseau commercial étendu comptant plus de 200 distributeurs en Asie du Sud-Est. Représentant environ 8 % du marché thaïlandais, la société affiche en 2013 un chiffre d’affaires en croissance qui atteint 9 millions de dollars, dont 40 % réalisés à l’international (Cambodge, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, etc.). Seed Asia dispose de deux entités opérationnelles, en Thaïlande et au Cambodge, ainsi que d’installations de recherche et de production.
L’acquisition de Seed Asia s’inscrit dans la stratégie de Vilmorin Cie visant à internationaliser ses activités en semences de maïs. Elle lui permet de s’implanter sur une nouvelle zone à fort potentiel – l’Asie du Sud-Est, qui représente près de 9 millions d’hectares de maïs. De plus, Vilmorin Cie accède ainsi à des ressources génétiques propriétaires en maïs tropical de grande qualité, également adaptées à d’autres zones, parmi lesquelles l’Inde, le Brésil, le sud de la Chine et l’Afrique. Vilmorin Cie bénéficiera complémentairement des accords de collaboration existants entre Seed Asia et des instituts de recherche ainsi que des universités, notamment aux Philippines, au Brésil et aux Etats-Unis.
