A record 170.3 million hectares of biotech crops were grown globally in 2012, at an annual growth rate of 6%, up 10.3 million from 160 million hectares in 2011. 2012 marked an unprecedented 100-fold increase in bio-tech crop hectarage from 1.7 million hectares in 1996 to 170 million hectares in 2012 – this makes biotech crops the fastest adopted crop technology in recent history: the reason – they deliver benefits.
Monsanto, Myriad: Two US Legal Cases Shaking Biotechnology Industries

The biotechnology industry has growing concerns over decisions to be taken this year by the United States Supreme Court in two cases involving the patenting of human genes and the exhaustion of patent rights in the context of easily reproducible products. Several areas of biotechnology could be affected by unfavorable deci-sions, provoking legal uncertainty and discouraging innovation, industry representatives said in a recent tele-phone conference. In the meantime, civil society stands fast in opposition.

The 10th Annual Biosafety and Biosecurity Training Course will be held this summer at the Hilton Fort Collins in Fort Collins, Colorado. The course will start July 11, 8AM, and run through noon (lunch included) July 18, 2013.
