The 3rd International Onion Congress, a biannual event, was staged on November 28th to 30th, 2012 at the Holiday Inn Jacarandas Hotel in Irapuato – the second-largest city in the state of Guanajuato and one of Mexico’s most important agricultural regions.
On the first and third day, roughly 100 attendees participated in several conferences featuring current topics related to onion crop improvements such as genetic enhancement, irrigation, agrochemical impacts and disease management, among others.
Juan Carlos Iñiguez, Onion Account Manager for Nunhems Mexico, made a presentation entitled “News in the Production of New Onion Hybrids.” Nunhems also had an exhibitor booth in the hotel ballroom, emblazoned with large onion photos and the words, “Juntos en el camino” (“Together on the way”), the slogan for Nunhems Mexico’s 2012 advertising campaign.
In between indoor conference days, the congress featured field demonstrations to display new onion varieties and to address current practical issues of the approximately 300 growers in attendance.
“As a headlining sponsor, Nunhems’ varieties were well represented, and growers who visited the congress seemed very pleased with the event,” Iñiguez said.
