37 years and counting – EU's backlog on GM approvals still growing

Status Update of 03 September 2012
The EU’s backlog of GM approvals continues to increase, thus threatening to disrupt Europe’s supplies of agricultural commodities. Our major trading partners in North and South America are operating much more efficient approvals systems, and are cutting approval timelines even further. This growing transatlantic gap between approval timelines matters because Europe is highly dependent on certain imported agricultural commodities such as soy. Three quarters of all soy cultivated in the world today is GM. The number of GM crops waiting for EU approval has risen to 74 (from 72 twelve months ago). One of the reasons for the delays is that political votes are not held according to the legally foreseen timelines.
But… why does this matter? This video, “Bureaucratic barriers to biotech”, shows the consequences of these delays.
