Bejo has expanded its breeding capabilities with the acquisition of the blanched celery breeding programme from the UK-based seed company MRL Seeds Ltd. This strategic step broadens the company’s genetic base and supports Bejo’s long-term ambition to offer a diverse, resilient and future ready celery assortment to growers worldwide.

The acquired programme includes established varieties such as Enterprise and Endurance, as well as several promising hybrids that will enter Bejo’s trials in the upcoming season. Known for traits including high vigour, dense structure and tolerance characteristics, the material complements Bejo’s existing portfolio of smooth, high-quality celery varieties. With global demand for celery increasing, the acquisition positions Bejo to accelerate innovation and strengthen its market leadership.

Celery

Celery plays a significant role in the international fresh market due to its crisp texture, versatility and nutritional benefits. By expanding its breeding resources, Bejo can explore new directions that meet the needs of growers, supply chain partners and consumers.

“By adding this breeding programme to our portfolio, we are expanding our genetic toolbox and reinforcing our ability to respond to market needs. This acquisition enables us to innovate faster and strengthen our position globally,” says Gerhard Völkel, Head of Leafy Crop at Bejo.

The acquisition supports Bejo’s vision for leafy crops and aligns seamlessly with the company’s vegetable identity: All you need for salad, Bejo has it. And as always, Exploring nature never stops.

Bejo will now integrate the new material into its breeding activities while preparing the first trials across key markets. The company looks forward to introducing new varieties in the coming years that will contribute to a robust and diverse celery marketplace. From now on, the MRL celery varieties will be integrated into our assortment and distributed under the Bejo brand through our Bejo subsidiaries and dedicated dealers.
