The impact of X-rays on seed germination: publication of a GEVES study in Plant Methods

France
December 8, 2025

Seed quality analysis using X-rays is increasingly being used due to its physically non-destructive nature.

However, previous studies reported conflicting effects on germination. The study therefore aimed to explore the impact of low-dose X-rays (<3 mGy) on the germination capacity of a wide range of species, varieties and seed lots.

The results obtained show that this technique is physiologically non-destructive and may even slightly stimulate germination in some cases.

The study also highlights the importance of genetics, physical quality and seed density in the response to exposure, providing recommendations for the application of X-ray imaging protocols.

Our study entitled “Understanding seed germination responses to low-dose X-rays: the role of seed quality, variety, and density” was published in the journal Plant Methods on 7 November.
