A milestone in Irish trials: 3.0 t/acre winter oilseed rape yield

Ireland
August 1, 2025

Winter oilseed rape is the most suitable combinable break crop for a Winter crop rotation. Ireland has a very favourable climate to grow WOSR and grows extremely high yielding crops.

Breaking Barriers: First 3.0 t/acre Winter Oilseed Rape Plot Cut at Seedtech

We're delighted to share an exciting milestone from our 2025 trials programme: Seedtech has recorded its first-ever 3.0 t/acre winter oilseed rape (WOSR) plot at our research farm in Faithlegg, Co. Waterford.

According to Trial Manager Denis Dunne, “This crop got off to a strong start last autumn and was managed using standard agronomic practices. We place real emphasis on soil fertility, and this field was well-balanced across all major nutrients. Despite a bit of pigeon damage post-Christmas, the crop had deep roots under each plant — and from there, the season just suited rape, with good sunshine during flowering.”

Technical Director Tim O'Donovan added:

“Rape is becoming one of the most dependable crops in Ireland with yields over 2 t/ac common at farm level in 2025. “Some growers have cut over 2.5 t/ac so it was only a matter of time until plots did 3 t/ac.  It just goes to show what’s possible and with forward price for harvest 2026 at €450/tonne, rape looks a very attractive option”

Trial Variety Performance – A Step Forward

While we’re not naming the 3.0 t/acre variety at this time — as it’s a coded line currently under evaluation — the result confirms the potential in our development pipeline. It also reinforces how modern hybrids, managed well, can deliver excellent performance in Irish conditions.
