Towards a new test to evaluate varietal resistance to septoria in flax?
April 1, 2025

The CASDAR LinicoLin research project (2022-2024), led by Terres Inovia, in partnership with GEVES, seed companies and Arvalis, has defined an initial protocol for evaluating the varietal resistance of fibre and oilseed flax to septoria (Septoria linicola). This fungus can cause significant yield losses and affect seed and fibre quality.
The protocol includes a method of artificial contamination in the field, with inoculum produced by GEVES, visual rating scales harmonised between partners to record symptoms on leaves and stems, and a method of classifying varieties to identify sensitive candidate controls with good behaviour (partial resistance).
However, further studies are needed to consolidate some results, particularly in fibre flax. If this initial protocol is validated by the CTPS Section, the acquisition of additional data will make it possible to refine the statistical method for classifying varieties. The application of this protocol should make it possible to exploit the genetic progress of septoria-tolerant varieties and facilitate the reduction of fungicides.
