On 01 April 2011, Vice Minister of Agriculture Niu Dun met with Sandra E. Peterson Chairman of the Board of Management of Bayer CropScience. At the meeting, Niu and Peterson exchanged opinions on issues related to agriculture development and cooperation between the two sides.
In his speech, Niu noted that Bayer CropScience had been engaged in agricultural research and extension in China for a long time and made achievements that benefited both China and Bayer. Niu said that the Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) would continue, on the basis of respecting their respective legal frameworksof China and Germany, to intensify its cooperation with Bayer CropScience in the fields of quality and safety of agricultural products and environmental protection. To this end, he proposed to make: a. joint research and capacity building for improvement of agricultural basic research and its capacity; b. demonstration and extension of modern agricultural technologies for higher yields and increased income; and c. research on international hot issues in agriculture for joint response to challenges confronted by agriculture.
Peterson said that she agreed with what Niu had said and proposed. She pointed out that Bayer CropScience had committed itself to R&D, innovation and extension of crop science over a long period of time, had a fruitful cooperation with China in the past years, and was willing to have closer cooperation in bio-technologic R&D, environmental science and extension of advanced technologies. By doing so, Bayer would continue to make contribution to sustainable development of agriculture in China.
At request, Niu gave a briefing on the overall development in the country’s agriculture and major policies in the field.
Participants included Yao Xiangjun Deputy Director General of the Department of International Cooperation, Yang Xiongnian Deputy Director General of the Department of Science, Technology and Education, and Zhou Puguo Deputy Director General of the Department of Crop Farming.
