List of options for farmers’ rights implementation available now

Rome, Italy
November 20, 2023

The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture has released the list of options for realizing Farmers' Rights, now accessible in English on the Treaty's website.

"Contracting Parties are invited to consider the full range of options for implementing Farmers' Rights, in accordance with their context, needs and priorities, and as appropriate," said International Treaty Secretary Kent Nnadozie.

The "Options for encouraging, guiding, and promoting the realization of Farmers’ Rights, as set out in Article 9 of the International Treaty," is a compilation of best practices contributed by Contracting Parties and other stakeholders. It comprises more than 30 options, organized under the 11 categories of measures and practices outlined in the Inventory on Farmers’ Rights. Each category features multiple options, accompanied by examples, links to original submissions, an explanation of the option, and details on the types of measures typically involved.

The List of Options and the Inventory were developed by the Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group on Farmers’ Rights, leveraging insights gained from the experiences of Contracting Parties and stakeholders.

The International Treaty currently comprises 151 Contracting Parties, including the European Union and stands as the first legally-binding international agreement explicitly recognizing the substantial contributions of smallholder farmers, local, and indigenous communities in preserving and conserving crop diversity that feeds the world. Article 9 of the International Treaty is dedicated to Farmers’ Rights, calling upon all nations to actively promote and protect these rights.
