Meeting of the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT Section) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) - Orientation debate on Plants obtained by New Genomic Techniques with CPVO's contributions

In the context of the development of its opinion on Plants produced by new genomic techniques, linked to the recently published EC proposal for a new Regulation, the Section for Agriculture, Rural Development and the Environment (NAT Section) of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) held an orientation debate with its Members on Thursday 7 September 2023 in Brussels.

To support this debate, several experts and stakeholders were invited to share their views on the “Characteristics and impacts of plants obtained by New Genomic Techniques, and proposed regulatory way forward”. Ms. Cécile Collonnier was invited as keynote speaker representative of the CPVO to answer the question "What are the differences in terms of property rights between plants produced by new genomic techniques, conventional breeding methods and classic GMO?". The presentation was followed by questions and answers with the Section Members including farmers, representatives of workers and companies in the food sector, environmental NGOs and consumer organisations.
