Oilseed rape in focus in conjunction with Teagasc and Limagrain

Ireland
January 21, 2022

Seedtech’s Tim O’Donovan hosted our “Oilseed Rape in focus” event in conjunction with John Spink of Teagasc Oakpark and Liam Wilkinson of Limagrain in a crop of LG Aviron this week in Oakpark.

The main topic covered was how to save €100 per acre on the average crop of WOSR in the next few weeks (most WOSR crops are 2 Green Area Index (GAI) which can save 100 kg N/ha) using the Teagasc canopy management research.

Tim O Donovan mentions how Winter oil seed rape is the only Autumn sown crop that has the ability to harness sunshine and use /store in august, September, October and reduce Fertilizer N in Spring and is better than a cover crop.

Tim O Donovan discuss the reasons why farmers should consider growing winter oil seed rape in 2022

Liam Wilkinson  Limagrain discussing the improvement in breeding of Oil seed Rape over the last 15 years and the real step change in newer varieties like LG Aureila Lg Aviron when it comes to Light Leaf Spot resistance, TuYV resistance and pod shatter - all of which improve yield consistency of WOSR.

With thick crops, you can reduce yield by applying spring nitrogen too early and too much as the crop develops too many petals which reflect the sun rather than intercept the sun.

Again, canopy management will help key decisions to avoid this.
