Cal/West Seeds announces that they have received a certificate of plant variety protection for CW Safflower 3268-OL. This new Oleic variety features higher yield potential combined with very high levels of oil providing growers with a new option for increasing their productivity.
This certificate represents years of research. To receive the certificate of protection, Cal/West Seeds was required to provide information about the pedigree and breeding history combined with documentation demonstrating that the variety was distinct from other varieties. The significance of plant variety protection is that it acknowledges that this variety of safflower is the intellectual property of Cal/West Seeds and provides a form of intellectual property rights protection to Cal/West. The Plant Variety Protection Certificate prohibits unauthorized reproduction and sale of this variety by any other company.
Dr. Jon Reich, Executive Vice-President of Research & Development for Cal/West Seeds believes that receipt of this variety protection is significant. In his words, “Awarding of the PVP Certificate for CW 3268-OL provides authoritative validation by the United States government that Cal/West Seeds’ research program is developing new improved and unique safflower varieties.” He adds, “Customers continue to have confidence in Cal/West Seeds’ safflower varieties.”
Cal/West Seeds is recognized around the world as a leader in forage breeding with over 75 years of experience. Major research programs are centered in the upper Midwest and California.
