Lisa Johnson joins the AgTech Insight team as Fresh Produce Loss Expert

Salinas, California, USA
November 13, 2019

We are excited to welcome Lisa Johnson to the AgTech Insight consulting team!

Aaron Magenheim, CEO of AgTech Insight states “Lisa’s impressive work in helping farmers and the supply chain understand and reduce food waste in the field and beyond is a critical component in solving the world’s food shortage. There was a recent news explosion from the FAO report stating that over $400B is lost in the world's food supply chain before it hits the consumer so having Lisa join the team is crucial to improve through innovation. Lisa brings a wealth of knowledge to the team as we help developing countries build and implement strategies to improve their food systems. Lisa has been a pioneer in her industry and we are very happy to have her on the team!”

Lisa says "What a thrill to be included in such a talented group! I’ll bring my east coast farm experience and wide variety of research experience to collaborative projects. My goals are to ensure growers are profitable and crops are consistently diverted to their highest use.”

Meet Lisa K. Johnson, Ph.D.:
I’m passionate about specialty crops and growers. I've worked in production, research, and marketing, in conventional and organic, local and global, sustainable and biotech. It's all important!
It seems I have a knack for choosing the really unpopular topics to dig into, though. I’ve been fascinated by the part of the crop we don’t use for a while now, and am the first in the country to use field sampling to show how much crop is available after the harvest. Similar to the circular economy, when we take unutilized waste streams and add them back into the loop, there can be economic, environmental, and social benefits. That’s a long way to say I’m fascinated by circular agriculture, sustainability, or the terminology of your choice, on a large scale.
I embrace technology and can see it having huge positive effects on farms. My focus on getting more of the crop out of the field has led to deep dives in dreaming up widely-adaptable harvesting equipment and vetting labor and alternative market-related apps.
My work is often called on by farms, non-profits, university researchers and governments, all looking to reduce food loss and use more of the crop that was so carefully produced. I am glad to use my experience to help design data collection programs for operations, or describe baselines and targets for regional or national loss reduction programs.
I have publications and other resources on my website, and I look forward to connecting on LinkedIn I’m based in Raleigh, North Carolina and have spent most of my life in the southeast.
