Euroseeds welcomes today’s vote where Jessica Polfjärd, rapporteur for the New Genomic Techniques (NGT) file, has been given the mandate to start trilogue negotiations. With the Polish EU Council Presidency already ready to initiate the interinstitutional negotiations, we urge co-legislators to engage in constructive and ambitious discussions to deliver an enabling regulatory framework for NGTs in Europe.

Euroseeds supports a final outcome that includes the following key elements:

• Proportionate and science-based rules for conventional-like NGT plants.
• Equal treatment of NGT plants with traits comparable to those from traditional breeding, including for organics.
• A future-proof framework that supports innovation and keeps Europe competitive.

With over 27 countries already moving forward, the EU must act swiftly to ensure its leadership in plant breeding innovation.
