Wild radish warrants radical response

Western Australia

Successful long-term management of wild radish involves driving down its seedbank to very low levels and doing ‘whatever it takes to stop a weed seed blow-out’.

This is a key message in a new Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) fact sheet about wild radish, as grain growers come to terms with the weed’s widespread resistance to various herbicide modes of action.

Many Western Australian growers have only one effective herbicide mode of action remaining that they can use to control wild radish – one of the most widespread and competitive weeds of grain cropping.

The fact sheet demonstrates that an integrated program of herbicide and non-herbicide tactics such as harvest weed seed control and crop competition will drive down weed seed numbers over time.

It includes specific strategies that can be employed throughout the season and a case study outlining step-by-step management to control wild radish on a theoretical farm.

The fact sheet is available at www.grdc.com.au/GRDC-FS-WildRadishManagement and will be included in the July-August of the GRDC magazine Ground Cover. To subscribe to Ground Cover visit www.grdc.com.au/groundcover.
