Annual meadow-grass (AMG) control has become much more difficult since the loss of key herbicide active substances such as isoproturon (IPU). Effective control can now only be achieved by the application of herbicides much earlier in the life of the crop. Treatments should ideally be applied pre-emergence of the crop and AMG or at the latest early post-emergence before the AMG has 3 leaves and has started to tiller.
At this early application timing, pendimethalin still provides the foundation for successful AMG control in spring barley. It is available alone as Stomp Aqua, in combination with picolinafen as Picona and also in combination with flufenacet as Crystal.

Provides season-long control of grass and BLW e.g. annual meadow-grass, chickweed, poppy, corn marigold, pansy, fat-hen, deadnettles and speedwells |
Residual and contact activity. Addition of picolinafen provides improved BLW control over solo pendimethalin e.g. cleavers |
Residual and contact activity. Addition of flufenacet provides post-em efficacy and increased consistency of AMG control |
BLW = broad leaved weeds
EAMU = Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use (Users must ensure that all conditions specified in the Extension of Authorisation for Minor Use are complied with and must be in possession of the Notice of Extension of Use, before use is undertaken. The EAMU can be downloaded at https://secure.pesticides.gov.uk/offlabels/search.asp)
Treatments applied pre-emergence of crop and weeds Untreated populations: Black bindweed 10/m2, Redshank 186/m2, Fat-hen 16/m2, AMG 16/m2
Why use Stomp Aqua, Picona or Crystal?
- Excellent season-long control of the key spring germinating weeds
- Control both ALS resistant and sensitive poppy and chickweed
- 3 different modes of action for resistance management
- Stomp Aqua, Picona and Crystal are all accepted by the BBPA for use on malting barley for brewing.
Leaving weeds uncontrolled will:
- Increase the weed seed burden in the soil affecting succeeding crops in the rotation
- Reduce the efficiency of combining
- Contaminate grain samples with weed seed
- Potentially increase moisture levels in the straw and grain, requiring increased drying costs
- Delay harvest and require pre-harvest desiccation
- Impact marketable grain e.g. where high quality is demanded for malting and seed crops
