Disease Threats
The predominant diseases of field beans are Chocolate spot (Botrytis fabae), Leaf and pod spot (Ascochyta fabae), Rust (Uromyces fabae) and Downy mildew (Peronospora viciae). Chocolate spot and rust are the most commonly occurring diseases.
Chocolate Spot on beans
A very aggressive disease, especially in mild and humid or wet weather. Chocolate spot is easily identified by the small irregular chocolate coloured spots that can appear very early in the season. Severe defoliation, stem browning and loss of flowers leads to significant yield loss
Bean Rust
Typically seen later in the season, Bean rust is favoured by warm dry weather. Earlier infections can occur if conditions are suitable. Rust can develop very rapidly and can prove very difficult to control if conditions are conducive to rapid development. PGRO estimates yield losses as high as 40% from severe infections.
Protecting your crop
The best control of Chocolate spot and Bean rust will be achieved from a 2 spray programme. Optimum T1 timing will be at early flowering when the first signs of disease are visible. At T2, mid to late flowering, a follow up treatment should be used where disease threats remain at high levels to ensure long term disease control.

- The product of choice for high-risk rust conditions, particularly where early signs of the disease are already apparent and kick back activity is required.
- Protectant activity against Chocolate spot.
