Updated North Dakota State University dry bean production guide available

Fargo, North Dakota, USA
July 11, 2013

Producers, agricultural consultants and others interested in agriculture can use the updated "Dry Bean Production Guide," a spiral-bound pocket-sized publication, to get the latest information on dry bean production, according to Hans Kandel, North Dakota State University Extension Service agronomist.

"The previous field guide was published in 2003, so it was in need of major updates, especially on the dry bean diseases of rust and white mold, dry bean insects, weed management, direct harvesting and other management issues," Kandel says.

NDSU Extension staff and other dry bean specialists wrote the revised and reviewed guide. The field guide also has a photo section with pictures of weeds, insects and diseases.

The publication is a comprehensive guide for those considering or growing dry beans. Some of the topics include:

  • Dry bean varieties
  • Growth stages and bean types
  • Planting rates and row spacing
  • Soil fertility requirements
  • Weed, insect and disease management and control
  • Irrigation and water use
  • Harvest management
  • Drying and storing dry beans
  • Production contracts

The Northarvest Bean Growers Association will mail a complimentary copy to all registered dry bean producers in the near future.

A Web version of the guide can be found at http://tinyurl.com/drybeanguide or purchased from the NDSU Distribution Center for $6 per copy, which includes shipping and handling. Call (701) 231-7882 or email NDSU.DistributionCenter@ndsu.edu for information or order online at www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs.

The "Dry Bean Production Field Guide" was partially funded by the Northarvest Bean Growers Association and produced by the NDSU Extension Service.
