Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) is concerned by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s (AAFC) reported site closures, workforce reduction of approximately 665 positions, and the uncertainty this creates for Canada’s public agricultural research system.
We recognize the dedicated AAFC researchers and staff whose work underpins productivity, sustainability, and competitiveness across Canadian grain production, and we extend our support to those affected.
WGRF’s priority is the funding of Canadian research capacity that directly supports farmer and industry outcomes. Public research infrastructure and scientific expertise are foundational to this mandate. Collaboration among private and public investors enables innovation, which includes foundational work in agronomy, genetics, disease resistance, and systems research.
Reports of facility closures add to our concern, and underscore the need for clarity on timelines, program continuity, and impacts on producer-facing research outcomes.
We are awaiting additional details from AAFC, particularly as it relates to the continuity of research programs, partnerships, and the long-term ability to deliver results for Canadian farmers.
