Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) commits $2.71 million to 15 new research projects
Saskatoon, SK, Canada
January 13, 2026
The Western Grains Research Foundation (WGRF) is pleased to announce $2.71 million in new funding for 15 crop related projects. This investment in Canadian agriculture is realized through an ongoing co-funding partnership between WGRF, Saskatchewan's Agriculture Development Fund (ADF), and participating producer groups.
“Funding research in collaboration with many partners helps WGRF invest in research for western Canadian farmers,” says Laura Reiter, WGRF board chair. “The research WGRF is investing in is intended to provide farmers with new tools to improve profitability on the farm.”
The research projects supported by this investment will assist with the development of new varieties with enhanced resiliency through genetic improvement to diseases, insects, and trait development.
These research goals align with WGRF’s priorities, explains WGRF Executive Director Wayne Thompson.
“The funding will work toward the priorities of WGRF to support research that will lead to new crop varieties and management practices,” adds Thompson.
A full listing of projects will be posted on the WGRF website once research contracts are in place.
