TASAI, The African Seed Access ndex, set to launch two key seed sector studies in Tanzania

January 13, 2025

TASAI Inc is gearing to start two studies in Tanzania. These studies responds to a call from the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Eastern Africa Regional Office to assess and develop an investment plan for the wheat and vegetable seed sectors in Tanzania. The central goal of the projects is to inform the necessary policy, investment, and industry reforms that will enhance the productivity of Tanzania’s wheat and horticulture sectors in line with the government’s objectives. The latter are summarized in Tanzania’s Agriculture Sector Development Programme Phase II (ASDP II) as follows:

To transform the agricultural sector towards higher productivity, commercialization level, and smallholder farmer income for improved livelihood, food security, and nutrition.”

The research methodology for the two studies is adapted from the TASAI approach, which assesses the performance of a seed sector across five broad categories: Research and Development, Industry Competitiveness, Service to Smallholder Farmers, Policy and Regulations, and Institutional Support. The methodology also includes assessment of seed production targets, seed demand, and estimation of the employment multipliers. The outputs will be a report describing and analyzing Tanzania’s vegetable seed sector and a costed investment plan for the same.
