According to the UPOV convention, a farmer who bakes a loaf of bread using grain of a protected variety that he grew himself can’t offer his mother-in-law a sandwich.

This claim is an extreme form of UPOV bashing expressed during talks with concerned NGOs. Strictly speaking, the text of the UPOV convention could indeed be interpreted along such lines, because it does specify that the protection doesn’t cover ‘own use’. But nobody in the UPOV world would actually go so far.Jumping to conclusions and then overreacting with great indignation seems to have become common practice these days.
