Science as Art: 3D mural depicts future of agriculture at the Biotechnology Industry Organization World Congress

Montreal, Quebec, Canada
June 19, 2013

Renowned Canadian street artist Dave "Chalkmaster" Johnston delivered more than just cool 3D art at the Biotechnology Industry Organization World Congress held in Montreal this week--he also delivered scientific understanding. On display at the Montreal Convention Center, the artwork captured the interest of more than 1,200 scientists, researchers and business leaders from the industrial biotechnology industry around the world.

Today industrial biotechnology is transforming the way we grow, produce, consume and discard everyday products from food to fuel to clothing. Using nature’s own biological systems, companies today can turn trash into fuel, corn stalks into plastic, grass into diaper absorbents and more.

The 10-foot by 20-foot mural depicts how biotechnology can harness naturally-occurring microorganisms in the soil to help plants grow healthier and faster resulting in higher yields. The painting also shows just a few of the everyday products that can now be made from renewable plant sugars, rather than petroleum--expressing the vision of a bio-based economy.

Trevor Thiessen, Novozymes Vice President of BioAgriculture poses with the 3D mural created by Toronto artist Dave 'the Chalkmaster' Johnston.
