The Battle to Brand GE Foods in the US

When farmers began to raise genetically engineered (GE) crops, they also raised a controversial issue: Should food made with ingredients from GE crops be labeled as such? The US Food and Drug Administration has the authority to ensure the safety and wholesomeness of most foods. According to the FDA's interpretation of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, the agency lacks the authority to mandate labeling based solely upon a consumer's "right to know" the method of production if the final product is considered safe. Monsanto Company asserts that mandatory labeling of products containing genetically modified (GM) ingredients would provide no benefit. Many disagree with Monsanto. Recent surveys indicate that more than 90% of the American public favors the labeling of GE foods.
