Euroseeds welcomes the European Commission’s new Strategic Approach to Research and Innovation for competitive, resilient and sustainable agriculture, forestry, rural areas and food systems. By bringing together the AgRI 2040 and Food 2040 frameworks, the strategy provides a common direction for future research and innovation priorities, funding and governance across the agri-food sector.
Euroseeds is particularly pleased to see the recognition of plant breeding within the AgRI 2040 “Cropping systems” action area. The strategy highlights the role of plant breeding, seed and variety knowledge, biotechnology and genetic resources in developing climate-smart, resource-efficient, resilient and diverse crop varieties, while calling for continued support for breeding activities.
Euroseeds also supports the strategy’s emphasis on strengthening the links between research, innovation, deployment and market uptake. Turning scientific advances into practical solutions will require close cooperation across the agri-food value chain.
As the AgRI 2040 framework moves towards implementation, Euroseeds calls on EU institutions to ensure that plant breeding and seed innovation receive strong support throughout the full research and innovation journey and that agriculture remains adequately reflected in FP10 and the European Competitiveness Fund.
Euroseeds stands ready to contribute its expertise to the further development and implementation of AgRI 2040.
