"Why we all need farmers to have access to better seeds"

Nyon, Switzerland
March 29, 2021

The World Economic Forum, in its Agenda on The Future of Food, has published an op-ed by the International Seed Federation. In it, ISF Secretary General Michael Keller wrote:

"Too few of the world’s farmers can access improved, quality seeds. But it is in all our best interests that they can do so. In an ideal world, they would be able to make informed seed choices and build strong functioning seed systems that link formal and informal markets."

The article called for stronger public-private cooperation and an open dialogue on plant breeding innovation, protection and use of genetic resources, and consistency in the regulation of international seed markets, in order to advance solutions.

The Seed Sector Declaration, part of the sector's engagement in the UN Food Systems Summit 2021, has been signed by more than 200 seed companies and associations committing to support the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and calling for urgent collaboration between the public and private sectors. ISF encourages more seed companies and associations to sign the Declaration and engage in the national dialogues as part of the yearlong preparation for the Summit.
