A coalition of stakeholders strongly supports the European Commission’s biotechnology strategy for positioning the European Union as a global leader in innovation

Brussels, Belgium
April 25, 2024

Several industry associations and organizations firmly supporting innovation in biotechnology and biomanufacturing actively welcomed the European Commission’s latest initiative aimed at advancing these critical areas within the EU. By embracing the potential of biotechnology and biomanufacturing across diverse sectors, the strategy is a pivotal step towards meeting future demands while aligning with the EU’s strategic long-term objectives, especially in terms of health security while advancing economic growth and sustainability goals.

Particularly, Alliance for Biosolutions, Association of Manufacturers and Formulators of Enzyme Products (AMFEP), Bio-Based Industries Consortium (BIC), BioChem Europe, Cellular Agriculture Europe, Confederation of European Yeast Producers (COFALEC), CropLife Europe, EFPIA, European Biodiesel Board (EBB), European Bioplastics, European Confederation of Pharmaceutical Entrepreneurs (EUCOPE), European Food and Fermentation Cultures Association (EFFCA), Euroseeds, EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtures (FEFANA), EuropaBio, Food Fermentation Europe, Good Food Institute Europe and IPA Europe emphasize the initiative’s significance in positioning the EU as a global leader in innovation.

However, the stakeholders stress the urgency for immediate actions to address the current bottlenecks in the strategy, hindering investment, innovation, and commercialization and drafted some key recommendations addressing the European Commission to streamlining the regulatory processes, ensuring access to necessary resources and enhancing the public understanding and recognition of biotech’s role in shaping Europe’s future.

With a shared commitment to driving progress in biotechnology and biomanufacturing, the coalition of stakeholders above calls upon the incoming European Commission to prioritize this initiative, backing it by legislative and financial commitments. They advocate for a collaborative approach, urging EU Member States to align actions at the national level and for the European Parliament to integrate initiative outcomes into legislative frameworks.
